John Davis is the principal attorney at DLF. He received his B.A. in Psychology from the University of Colorado and as an undergraduate, also studied Public Administration. He obtained his Juris Doctorate from the University of Denver College of Law in 1989 and was admitted to the Colorado Bar that year. Immediately following graduation from law school and admission to the bar, Mr. Davis was appointed as a Deputy District Attorney with the Denver District Attorney’s Office, where he served as a prosecutor for approximately 10 years. In that time, Mr. Davis prosecuted hundreds of criminal cases including homicides, sexual assaults, kidnappings, drug cases and other charges. Prior to obtaining his Juris Doctorate and becoming a state prosecutor, Mr. Davis worked as a police officer for approximately six years and then as an intern with the Denver District Attorney.
During his tenure at the District Attorney’s Office, Mr. Davis’ assignments included district court felony prosecutions, the drug and gang prosecutions unit and “complaints” or felony case filings office. While at the District Attorney’s Office, Mr. Davis also served as an instructor at the Denver Police and Denver Sheriff’s academies, Red Rocks Law Enforcement Academy and the Colorado Division of Wildlife Law Enforcement Academy. Mr. Davis provided instruction in areas including Constitutional law, Civil Rights, Use of Force and Use of Deadly Force, Evidence, Criminal and Civil Liability, Courtroom testimony and Report Writing.
Upon leaving the District Attorney’s Office, Mr. Davis entered into private practice and began representing clients in Colorado state and federal courts, primarily in civil and employment law litigation. Mr. Davis has tried dozens of jury trials and participated in numerous mediations and arbitrations and has handled complex civil and employment cases in state and federal courts. Mr. Davis later began to focus his practice on the representation of public safety personnel and providing legal services to law enforcement agencies. He has represented firefighters, EMTs, police officers, sheriff’s deputies and civilian personnel in civil, administrative and criminal matters.
Mr. Davis continues to hold a full Colorado P.O.S.T. certification, is a certified de-escalation techniques instructor, firearms instructor and Force Analyst and is an instructor at the Highlands Ranch Law Enforcement Training Academy in multiple topic areas.
